Unofficial Visits For Basketball Players

The following information is provided for basketball coaches or players who are interested in learning about the recruiting process.  The information was taken from an older article source so some of the information my not currently apply.  I hope the info will however give you a good general idea about making an unofficial visit to a college under the NCAA rules.

When can I visit a college campus?

A good question that is asked frequently.  The answer:  Any time you wish.  If you are in elementary school, junior high or high school you may visit a college campus at any time, provided you or your family pay for the trip.  This is called an "Unofficial Visit," and will be the focus of this column.

Can I really visit any time I want?

Well, ok.  There are some minor exceptions.  You would not be permitted to visit with a college coach during a "dead" period, which is generally a two-day period that surrounds the signing of the National Letter of Intent.  Of course, you will want to check with the school before you visit to be sure you are avoiding a dead period.

What is the best way to set up a visit?

Contact both the admissions office and the coach of the sport in which you are interested.  The admissions office can schedule a general campus tour, which you should view as essential to your trip.  Then, contact the coaching staff and request an opportunity to visit with the coach while you are on campus.  Ask for a tour of the athletics facilities and find out whether you can watch a practice.

When should I visit?

The best time to visit a college campus is when classes are in session.  To minimize missed class time at your school, try to arrive at the college campus on Friday.  That way you also can attend some college classes and some social functions.  Some visit college campuses during summer vacation when time is more plentiful.  While this method can help you see many colleges in a short period of time, you should also consider a visit during the academic year.

Is it worth taking a trip to campus if I am not being recruited?

Absolutely.  Taking a trip to campus can help you promote your interest and abilities.  Even if you are not a potential Division I athlete, there are hundreds of Division II and III schools that may not know about you.  What a great way to demonstrate your commitment, and let a smaller school know that you are available.

What rules should I know about for an Unofficial Visit?

The basic NCAA rule that allows you to visit at any time requires generally, that you and your family pay for the visit.  In all NCAA divisions,  the coach may provide you and your parents with game tickets for a campus athletics contest.  A coach also may drive you and your parents or friends to see off-campus practice and competition sites in your sport as well as other school facilities located within a 30-mile radius of campus.  In Division II, the school can provide you and your parents with a meal in the school's on-campus cafeteria.  In Division III, you can receive a meal in the cafeteria as well as lodging in the school's dormitory.  Under all of these circumstances, the trip to campus is still considered an unofficial visit.

Can I take more than one Unofficial Visit to a particular campus?

Yes, you can take as many as you want, provided you follow the rules listed above. If you live close to a campus, it is a great way to get to know the instructors, the coaches and perhaps your future teammates.

How long can the visit last?

As long as you want.  If you follow all of the guidelines, you can visit for a few hours or a few days — whatever your schedule can accommodate.
