Motion Offense
Motion Basketball Play Used By Purdue University
The Motion basketball offense is widely used by team's of all levels. As the name suggest it creates motion which makes a defense work hard to guard agianst the play. Motion can be as complicated or as simple as a basketball coach wants to make it. There are some basic rules which make the concept of the play work.
One rule I touch on in the animation is the two or three second rule. This rule means if a players stands still in one spot for more than two or three seconds he/she must move to create motion. He has a few options on where to move and what to do. One option is to set a screen away from the ball. Another option is to set a screen on the ball for a pick and roll. This rule forces your team to be in constant motion. It also gives your team some freedom and makes the play unpredictable.
I'm only giving the basics of the play to introduce this great basketball play to the playbook. I'll be doing an in-depth breakdown of the motion offense soon to go along with this animation. I had planned to use a video of Purdue running the offense; however, I lost the file from my computer and will have to recapture the video. Press the play button to start the animation.
